I started a 37 gallon tank with a 100% flourite botttom. I have three cherry barbs and some plants in there right now. I was planning on getting 12 Corydoras, but I'm concerned about the effect the substrate will have on them. The flourite seems too sharp for Corys. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I don't know where people get this idea that Flourite is "sharp". I have rinsed a lot of Flourite with wet water logged hands and never had a problem.

I guess people look at the flat angular shape of it and assume it's sharp because it's not round.

Thousands of planted tank keepers have Flourite and most of them have Corys in the tank. Makes you wonder why you don't see more problems with the "sharp" Flourite hurting the Corys.

I was under the impression that barbels coming off the catfish was a water quality issue, and not a substrate issue.

I put a thin layer of Pool Filter Sand on top of Flourite, but only because I like the look of sand.

Look, by most substrate standards Flourite is sharp. It is a question of degrees: The smoother, the better. Plus we differ in scale from cories and especially loaches and eels that bury themselves in the stuff. The sharp edges may be too small for humans to detect, but not for smaller fish.
