sand as substrate

can you use pool filter sand mixed with a little gravel with success? ive been pushing around the idea of a planted aquarium for awhile now but my tank is 75 gallons and i dont want to take out the existing sand/gravel more question,what plants if any can i keep at 2 watts per gallon and no co2?

I know you can grow some plants with sand, no co2 and 2 watts per gallon. Java moss and fern. Some swords suplimented with root tabs.
