changeing 75g over to planted tank this week thats been running for 2 yrs ,and ran into a issue

mangage to only find 3 bags of flourite locally and stores wont get any more in for atleast 2weeks

i can get shultz and soilmaster today

but which would be the best option

mixing flourite with shultz?

mixing flourite with soilmaster?

and then haveing a layer of tiny natural gravel on top

and is a dusting of peat moss a must do?

If you mix substrates of different sizes the larger substrate will end up on top. So don't try capping the Flourite with tiny gravel.

Instead get a bag of gravel that's bout the same size as the Flourite and mix the two together.

You don't need the dusting of peat but it does help.

ok for will 3 bags of flourite be enough for a 75g ?
i was thinking that would not be enough and thats why i was looking at mixing the flourite with either the soilmaster or shultz

with the light the tank will have 3 wpg gallon on it, as the tank used to be a salt setup with a ice cap 660 ballast
and of course a co2 setup from u rex LOL when tax return gets in
i have some larger gravel a little smaller than pea size i will use that instead

I have a 75g I've been running for one year now with three bags of Flourite as the base and topped with Soilmaster. It's a great combo! Because the Soilmaster is much lighter weight than the Flourite I've had very little of it come up to the top level. They are both a fractured clay product so I think they work very well together. SMS has very good CEC.

I STRONGLY advise against the gravel because they'll have very different appearaces, even though they may have similar size. Flourite is fractured clay with very angular, irregular edges. If your choosen gravel is more rounded in appearance; well to me, it clashes - I find it visually annoying.

I think the SMS will lower your pH and GH/KH a bit. Which, depending upon your tap, may or may not be a good thing.

I would go with all SMS, I like it better than flourite. I have one bag in my 75 gallon and it is plenty.
