i am going to start up a 2.5 gallon tank but i do not have any spare subsrate... all we have on hand for soil is cactus potting soil...? so you think it would be alright to use this as my main subsrate and maybe i can lay a fine layer of sand on top...?

If you are not going to plant heavily, stick to sand only.

If you have a choice, you have a problem, till you elect your choice. No choice, no problem, only consequences, learn to live with them.

If the cactus potting soil is what I think it is (very similar to the Shultz Aquatic Potting stuff... more like little light rocks and not really like 'soil'). The it would be fine to use as the main substrate, though it is very light, and will be hard to keep plants down in it. The sand will probably sift down underneath after a while.

If it is acctually like 'soil' or dirt though, it sure will probably make a mess any time you have to move plants, so you will want to carefully consider the trouble it may be before using it as the main.

As for sand, depending on the grain size of the sand, it can compact plant roots if you use straight sand and kill plants.

(Oh, and if you are close to Aurora, you can PM me.... I have a couple kinds of substrate you may want, and more than plenty to share for a small tank.)

Something so expensive and addictive HAS to be illegal. I'm just waiting for the police to break down my door and confinscate my fish food.
