Substrate Recommendations

I have a new tank on the way. It will be 60x18x25 so I will have a 60x18 base to hold my substrate. This will be my second tank, the first is a low tech 50 planted tank. The new tank will also be a low tech planted. I'd like black substrate and I would like a course material. My current tank has a planting mix from aquariumplants.com which is doing what it is supposed to do. But my current substrate is brown which I don't like and it is very fine and hard to keep clean.

thanks,
Mark

If you're okay with something sandy, Black Diamond Blasting Grit would do the trick. $8 for 50lbs. Tractor Supply.

Safe T Sorb is much lighter but won't look dirty. It's less than $5 for 40lbs. Here's what it looks like.

Another option is crushed black lava rock. Hit up your local/regional landscape suppliers.

Pretty sure you can get different grades of Black Diamond. I believe the 10/20 is the coarsest...or was it 40/60? Do some searches. I think most get the one with '30' in it...

Just make sure you get Black Diamond and not some other type of blasting grit. I couldn't find it locally, so picked up pretty much the same thing...except it was nickel slag...not coal slag. Rather toxic.
