Black Quartz?

I obtained my discus tank from my place of employment as an 'ex display tank'...however one of the old staff members used coral sand in it So I'm forever trying to lower PH for happy fishies.

So it's time for a change! Before deciding on a planted tank, I purchased some black quartz. It's quite fine and I thought would compliment my discus' colours nicely. Is this ok for heavily planted tank? (I really don't know much more than stick a plant in the subtrate and replace it if it dies haha ). Although I've had an anubias barteri driftwood in there for quite a long time, I need all the advice I can get!

Thanks in advance
