How long does it for sand to sink to the bottom?

I have ADA aquasoil and I want to have a layer of sand on top just for looks. I'm wandering how long it will take for the sand to mix into the aquasoil. Months? years?

If I tightly compact a layer of sand on top and then add another loose layer of sand on top of that it will work, but it will be much harder to plant and rearrange the plants. So if I spread a loose layer of sand how long will it take to sink.

Thanks once again

You don't like the look of the AquaSoil? The sand will settle to the bottom (through the AquaSoil) anyway, so it probably won't work like you're expecting it to. The finer grains are going to wind up at the bottom....

If you just put a loose layer of sand over the aquasoil, you will be lucky to get 6 months before it settles.

A few things apply though...

1. The current in the tank
2. If you have any foraging fish
3. how or if you vacuum the substrate

The more you have or do, the shorter that time frame gets.

I would put a 2" layer over the aquasoil. That would last a year anyways.

I had 3 inches of play sand over gravel. Everything I planted grew great, an after 1 1/2 years, the sand was still doin great! I vacuumed vigorously every week as well.

If you wish to keep the sand on top of any other media, just spread a nylon mosquito net over the media, and then lay the sand. The sand will remain on the top for years. Plant roots will passthe net to the media, but if you wish to remove any such plants with a very large root system you will have to trim the roots just above the net.
