Question Black Marine Sand problem

Hi all,

I had a couple of bags laying around of about a year and finally I decided to use them for the shrimp tank. It said safe for salt and fresh water. Following directions on the back (to soak overnight,) I soaked them in a bucket of water to get all sand wet. I soaked and soaked... and soaked ... for almost a week! The darn thing refuses to get wet! Some floats on the surface, while some clumps around air bubbles. Whatever I tried to get it wet doesn't seem to help the least bit. What's wrong with this thing?

The sand is very fine, coal black and shiny.

Anyway, I just had to use clean beach sand, (sterilized) as my shrimpies where coming soon. I still want to know why black sand won't get wet.

Any ideas?

I have the same (I believe) type of sand in my tank. Mine took a week to finally settle every little bit. The cherry shrimp helped that as well. I would just take the floating sand masses and smash them with my fingers, releasing the air.

yes it will take about a week for it all to sink to the bottom. my shrimp helped out as well when they would grab ahold of it and make it sink. Just give it some time and it will all work out.
