question about reusing aquasoil and powersand

Hi all,

I have a tank that I'd like to rescape with about 1 year old ADA Amazonia and Powersand Regular. When I first set up the substrate, I followed the ADA directions of laying down the powersand first, then the aquasoil and capped with the powder type. After some aggressive aquascaping, a lot of the powersand is intermixed. If I reuse the Amazonia, I'll probably cap it with some new Aquasoil for a uniform appearance.

My question is: am I negating the powersand benefits by having it uniformly mixed in the substrate? OR - Does it need to be at the bottom?

Thanks,

Dave

After initial use, PS just provides extra surface for BB.
I've pulling out mine for the last couple of years...

If I recapped it with a couple inches of new substrate, the powersand wouldn't be exposed to light. I'm not sure if algae would be an issue.
