I'm wondering if rinsing the substrate too much will result in losing all the nutrients? When I set up my 25g, I washed it quite a bit, but it still gets unbelievably cloudy when I move things around in the tank. What should I do to prevent this next time around?

Do a bit rinsing is enough, to avoid cloudy water, fill the tank with water until 3/4 of the tank(use a plastic bag to break the water force. Place the wood, plants, filter, heater, whatever and DRAIN the water off.Now again fill the tank with water with the plastic bag and you will realize the tank is now clearer.

Tony, the answer to your question is ~ No you cannot over rinse flourite~... the dust in the bags is from packing, shipping and handling.

Rinsing Flourite in a bucket till the water is crystal clear before adding it to your tank saves a lot of messes down the road and it will not lose any effectiveness by rinsing it this way and it lasts virtually forever.

I use a paint strainer to wash the Flourite. It removes the dust but keeps all the fine particles that the plant roots love. You can wash about of a bag at a time. Took me around 20 minutes to do a whole bag last night and it was the dustiest bag I had ever seen.

So this flourite stuff, do you buy it from a petshop or a gardening place? Hope its the latter, our petshops suck somewhat.

Pet store.

And the Seachem website doesn't list any vendors in Africa at all.

Email Seachem and ask - never hurts to ask where the closest distributor may be...
