120 gallon tank, recommended substrates to check out? (prefer black)

I have a 120 gallon tank im going to plant, going to try low tech first, then if that doesnt work ill switch to CO2 and extra lighting later.

I want to have black substrate. What a good combination of affordability, performance and good looks? when i say good looks, i mean my local shop has some stuff they recommend but its diarrhea brown and looks horrible lol.

If you have a recommendation please also let me know how much I will need for a 120 gallon (60"x18.5" surface area) and where I can order it online.

Thanks!

do some reading on Eco-complete. Its black and works wonders ... I'm loving the stuff

Aquariumplants.com sells it for about $20 a bag

Is Hokey Pokey Really What It's all about ?

how many bags would one need for a 60x18.5" surface area?

edit.. i appears i need 1.5 bags for ech square foot. that meants i need 11 bags to do a 3" depth.

$220 is getting kinda pricy for substrate. Is there something i should look into buying in bulk at local shops?

If you want a true black substrate you can get Tahitian Moon Sand at the LFS, but it's just as expensive as Eco-Complete.

There's also a 3M Colorquartz Crytals. There's a link on their web site to locate a local ditstibutor.

If you can live with charcoal gray there's Soilmaster Select and Turface pro League. Both are very inexpensive at under $20 for a 50# bag. I used about 75# of Turface in my 120g (48x24x24). You can see what the substrate looks like in the link in my sig.
