3M Color Quartz as a Cap and possible concern

Never used this stuff before, but I just received a bunch for free from a local aquarist. I like the way it feels. It is much softer than the pool filter sand, and plant substrates I have used and am using.

I currently have a mix of Floramax and eco complete in my planted tank as the substrate right now, and I was thinking of capping that with the 3M Color Quartz. I will need to do a thorough cleaning of the current substrate, since I have not syphoned the bottom for poop (mainly because I can't see the stuff anymore since I changed to the darker substrates).

Before I began cleaning the top of the current substrate, I started to rinse the quartz, even though the guy who gave me the stuff said I wouldn't need to. After rinsing it for some time, the water still seemed a bit cloudy, but not too cloudy, and my hands were stained a dark grey to black because of stirring the sand with my hands. After seeing this, I became concerned.

Is this stuff safe for aquarium use and my fish? I hear about people using this, but wasn't sure after seeing how badly my hands were stained. I plan on doing some more rinsing this evening.

Hmmm, I guess I was a bit nervous after trying to clean the stuff and my hands were completely covered in black from the rinsing.

I received the stuff free from a local aquarist, but I do know that a lumber yard sales it in Raleigh, NC.

You mentioned your hands were stained black - how long did it take to come off, or were you able to wash it off right away?

My first guess would be that it's full of dust/fines that are the same color as the grains (black), and this coated your skin, possibly getting in the pores, etc. (kinda like playing with charcoal).

I rinsed and cleaned the quartz 3 days ago, and still have some black on my hands. I could wash off some right away.

In fact thats what it reminded me of, wet charcoal.

I have one tank with black 3M colorquartz and have not noticed black discoloration on my hands or clouding in the tank. It was used when I got it, but dry. I gave it a quick rinse and used it. A little dust came off, the rinse water was a little dirty, consistent with dust or dirt from storage, not dust from the colorquartz.
