Substrate sugestions please
Well I set up my first planted tank, and I'd like to switch substrates. Right now I have Flourite in a 10 gallon, but I cant stand the look and color of it. I've looked into ADA Amazonia soil, and its out of my price range. I've used Home Depot play sand before in my cichlid tanks, and I like looks of it, but from what I read its not good for a planted tanks because it compacts.
I have some realy cool looking inert gravel, but I dont want to mix it with anything I cant remove. I worked realy hard for this gravel, I went to a land scaping company and sifted through a pile with a coffee can for two hours to get a bucket full of fine gravel.
Anyone have some sugestions on what I can do cheap that looks natrual?
I read the article about putting play sand on top of flourite is this ok to do? or will the sand end up sinking under the Flourite? Can play sand also cause algae?
Any sugestions welcome, Like I said I'm on a fixed income and my spending limit on a substrate is about $20, and that means no plants till next month.
