A question

Ok so I already have play/silica sand in my tank because it was a cichlid tank that I am now turning into a planted tank. i know that if I just use the sand it can cause gas pockets and end up killing the roots of my plants. I am wondering if I add something like pea size gravel mixed with the sand if this would help to prevent that?

That won't work. What you will end up with is a layer of sand on the bottom and the pea gravel on top.

MTS will do the job, I have tons of them and I only encountered one gas pocket under a large piece of driftwood but it didn't cause any damage.

The roots won't suffer, especially if you keep Crypts and root dependent plants as they will produce large root systems. Plants also transfer oxygen to their roots.
