Getting Substrate The Old Fashioned Way

There is a creek behind my house (Cypress Creek) that has sandy bottom and is very nice. I was wondering on trying to use some of this as substrate. Fish and freshwater clams abound. What's the best way to preparing this for the aquarium? I know there are a lot of factors on doing this, but have any of y'all had luck with doing something like this.

boil the pilly wiss out of it. The last thing you want is to add some parisites into your tank.

Peace,
Ry

I raise my sword in the air in the battle against clado. I have been beaten in this battle but the war is not over. As my wounds heal I amass another army, an army with many legs, an army of Amano's......

I thrust my tridant into the mass of medusa like staghorn. I am wounded but I refuse to take a knee.

Do you know what else is in that watershed? You might be digging up sediments with nasty stuff in it.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

It's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot.

That IS an aquascape, it's titled "The Vacant Lot".

Not exactly. It is does have sewage treatment plant run-off. But we have found a lot of freshwater clams, crawfish, dragonfly nymphs and some riffle beatles. Will this give you any indication of it being acceptable?

I would not even think about it here in Iowa. Out in the country about every 20 miles huge hog lots. Atleast once month you hear about streams getting tainted from the lots.
