*deep* vacuuming of substrate

Hi. During my recent rescape of my 20H, I was sticking the gravel vac way down into the substrate in order to vacuum up any particles that may have settled over time. The water in the 5g bucket that came out while doing this was dark brown, almost black. I was just wondering if this is normal. The tank has been set up since February '05, but it was thoroughly rinsed at the time. I've pretty much only vacuumed the surface in the past, as I try not to disturb the plants. I know fluorite is dusty, but does anyone else experience this?

after a while, all tanks seem to need or benefit from a good deep gravel vac.
