10g with one bag of eco, want to add more depth...

Alright, i started up a 10g low tech tank for my soon to aquire dwarf pufferfish.

I bought 1 20lb bag of eco complete but it seems kinda thin for the tank. I'd like to add maybe 1/4-3/4 of an inch of some substrate to the tank...it is planted already and prefer not to uproot everything, since its just starting to settle in and grow a bit. Could i just add some potting soil/soil to the surface and by gravity, let it work its way through the larger eco granuels to the bottom?

no you can't. it will make a mess. what you could do if you really want potting soil is to freeze it into cubes/blocks or whatever shape you want. and stick in in to the bottom of the substraight.

I personally would just buy another bag of eco complete and save myself from the mess. and if you dont want to use the whole bag then just save it so you have extra for down the road.

good luck with your new tank!

The eco complete will be fine if stored dry. The water is supposed to help your tank cycle faster but I don't think it does much. I have used eco complete that has been dry for over a year and it has worked great.

How about adding a five lb. bag of Este's black quartz gravel on top of the eco. If they mix, no biggie.

I added a base a thin flat rocks to my 10g tank, then I added about 1/2" of peat moss, then added the bag of Eco. It give the appearance of being more tankwise.

But this doesn't help if you tank is already planted.
