Question used Flourite

Hi all,

I have a chance to by some used Flourite (about 2 bag amt.) for $20. Is this a good substrate and is the price with it? Responses are greatly appreciated.

If you were planning on using Fluorite anyway, then I'd say go ahead and do it. Fluorite is supposed to be good forever and $20 for 2 bags is a bargain.

You cant beat that deal. Its already washed and half the price. Anyone who has bought bags of flourite knows the brutal leangth of time it takes to get it clean.

Flourite has a very very long shelf life - I'd say go for it!

I've used the same Flourite for at least 3 tanks over a span of about 13 years. I just put it in a bucket and slowly run cold tap water through it as I stir it by hand until most of the crud rinses out.

I think I paid about $50 for 2 bags(new), but I've had it for over a year now and it still seems to be fine. I'd say go for it.

I paid $12 for two bags, labelled as gravel cleaners, the [email protected] employee could not be convinced that they were mis-sku'd.

Anyway, $20 for two bags (if that's what you get) is an okay price. Alternatively, [email protected] and other stores might pricematch online suppliers that sometimes sell bags for $10 ea. Big YMMV, but asking doesn't cost you anything.

I am lookin at a 90 gallon to setup wondering if mixing it with regular gravel will help and keeep cost down. I was going to mix one bag flourite to 2 50lb bags of gravel.

You are better off using laterite instead. When mixing flourite with another gravel it is recommended that it is 50/50.

Peace,
Ry

That's 50/50 based on depth not weight.

As Ryzilla said you would be better off with a couple of boxes of laterite (one ounce per gallon) and the gravel. Don't forget the thin (almost see though) layer of peat moss and if you can get it mulm from an existing tank.
