First Time w/ Dirt - 20L

Alright guys. Here we go. I don't normally like the idea of soil tanks, because they just seem like a muddy mess especially for a guy like myself who likes to rescape all the time. However, I wouldn't be a very good aquarist if I didn't at least give it a shot, right?

So here's my plan...going to go through the mineralized top soil process. I'll be picking up some soil this weekend to begin the soak, dry, repeat, sift process. I'll probably go three or four cycles while I wait for some clay and potash to show up.

I know its going to vary based on soil content, but, generally, how many pounds of soil will I need to start with for a 1 inch layer in a 20L? Ill be capping it with a 1 inch cap, most likely using a mix of pfs and black blasting crystals.

I use dry ferts to EI dose my 75. With soil, will I need to dose the tank at all, or will I want to modify an EI dosing regime?

Thanks,

Mike

Here is a calculator to give you an idea.

Thanks. I saw that, but I'm wondering how much dirt I need to start with since I'll be sifting some out. And the calculator doesn't offer a "dirt" option.

I don't believe there is really a way to calculate that. Different bags have different amounts of sand/soil/mulch content. With how cheap it is though, why not make more than you think you'll need, then do a bit more than that?

I kind of figured as much. Was more-so shooting for a baseline. I can always leave it dry and use it down the road if I decide I want to setup another dirty tank.

I haven't been to the lawn and garden section lately...what size bag of MGOPM did you use?

If you're going the MTS route, you won't need MGOPM, just cheap old top soil. Think it's around a 1.50 for a 40 lbs bag.

I think what is floating in yours is the compost enrichment. I use the cheapest 40# bag I can find at Home Depot $1.17 unless I see it on sale for .87

Consider it done. The expensive part will be the water to rinse this stuff. I think I may get two or three bags and just go through the process all at once. Then if I want to add more dirt, setup another tank, or hook up a local...all I have to do is open a tub. Saves me the hassle of going through this mess again down the road.

high tech or low?

i dont think that the dirt should effect too much a dosing regiment...

dirt and miracle grow should be great for heavy root feeders and EI should be good for nutrient intake from the water column right?

i have a low tech dirt tank that im hitting with the same ferts as EI just at 1/3rd the recommended dosing schedule

when it says an amount 3x's a week, im dosing that amount 1x's a week

It is better to travel well than to arrive.

Honestly...itll probably develop into a high tech tank depending on how the tank matures. I just picked up a 24 inch 4 bulb T5 fixture, so I have options depending on how the plants do.
