aquasoil question

hi everyone, I am going to be purchasing a 29gallon tank soon and I was wondering if the powered version of the aqua soil is like sand. I also want to know if cories will be ok on this substrate. if not should i get decorative sand and put it over the aquasoil?

aquasoil powder type is just like the regular stuff, except it is smaller. No problem for cories.

personally, I would not use the powder type in a 29 gallon tank.

ic. I really like sand substrate so would buying the regular aquasoil and putting sand over it be a good idea?

I'd say no.

The sand will eventualy work it's way under the Aquasoil.

You can place the sand toward the front of the aquarium and the Aqua Soil behind it, but I wouldn't cap the aqua Soil with sand. I think it would be a mess.

Mike I agree. Do not use sand over aquasoil. Also do not use the powder version of AS. I have used both and there is no advantage of using the powder version, only disadvantages. It breaks down faster and is a mess to work with.

how many bags should i get for my 29 gallon tank? And I was also wondering if putting another layer of gravel or mixing will reduce the effectiveness of the aquasoil

I believe we have a substrate calculator that will help you determine how much Aqua Soil you will need for your 29G.

What are you planning to layer the Aqua Soil with? Like we said earlier, layering with something finer grained is going to lead to the finer grained substrate working it's way under the Aqua Soil. A bigger grained substrate is going to work it's way over the Aqua Soil. That is why a person using Aqua Soil and Power Sand needs to be very careful about how it is layered and how much of each product is used.

Mixing Aqua Soil with another is kind of pointless. It is a great stand alone substrate. There is no other substrate you can add to Aqua Soil that is going to make it a better product as far as I know.

I think I'm just going to use aqua soil alone. I was looking at this link Aqua Soil Amazonia
and it suggests that I have to get power sand? what is the purpose of it? and do I really need it?

I used to have the substrate calculator bookmarked before my computer crash, but now I can't seem to find it. I seem to recall it was quite easy to get to before, but either I'm losing my mind or it's hiding better than a needle in a haystack.

Would you have a link to point me in the right direction, Mike?

For a 29 gallon if the dimensions are about 30x12x19 you will need at a minimun one 9L bag and one 3L bag. To be safe get 2 9L bags, have some left over for topping off in the future. If you want to powersand get one 2L bag. Get the powersand special if you want to use powersand. It is not necessary but I like it. If more just personal choice. If you use powersand you will not have to fertilize as much for the first month or 2.
