Upgrading Flourite

Currently I have 2 tanks using Flourite black sand. I purchased the sand long before I considered using topsoil as a substrate and wish I would have gone that route. Soon I will be moving and wanted to know if anyone has experience combining Fluorite and a mineralized soil.

Maybe adding a substrate underneath?

Combining no. Layering flourite over soil yes. You want to layer a soil tank with a coarser substrate. Otherwise it will mix anyways and that won't be a pretty scene. This is assuming your doing a plant and fish aquarium.

I use Flourite black sand in my tank to cap my organic potting mix and everything is going good so far.

I used Flourite black sand and MTS in a 10 gallon tank. I mixed an intermediate layer half and half, so there wouldn't be such a sudden change in substrate composition. But, when I tore down the tank later, all of the MTS was in the bottom layer, with the sand on top, with the line between them so sharp I was able to scoop the sand off almost 100% pure. Fine stuff just naturally migrates to the bottom.
