Bad Topsoil For MTS?

Take a look at this Topsoil and tell me if I should find something else for MTS...

This topsoil has sticks and rocks in it... I could take the time to sift it but I'd rather just go buy a proven brand of Topsoil for MTS.

I purchased this at Home Depot for $1.

That's the stuff you want. You will have to sift it regardless. The more expensive stuff typically has ferts in it and you don't want that. Just make sure that the bag is mostly dirt and not sand, I bought a bag from HD and that's what happened to me.

I just sifted 2 40lb bags of this stuff and got some good dirt out of it; however, there is maybe 5 or 10% sand...

Don't worry about it. Soil is made up of a mixture of sand, silt and clay. The sand particles help keep the soil from compacting too much along with other helpful properties.

A little bit of sand is just fine, you just don't want the entire bag to be sand. That happened to me......

The frist two days I let it sit in water then pour the water off put water back in for two more days got any floaters out and then put it out to dry when dry put it back in and add water for two more days mix it up and get more floaters out repaet 4x Dry and wet and then sift it the hole thing took me a mouth and half it's a little bit of work but will hope to see the payoff in my tank.

Interesting... I'm into my first dry cycle.

I have it sitting in my garage. I though I should get a fan on it or something to help speed up the process.

If this thread is still open, I Have bought MTS from a place in Florida

Now I have another member of my forum that use Miracle Grow (ORGANIC) Top Soil.

Get one of those kids toys for the beach with the many holes in the bottom (can you pull out and debris in the soil) .

After 3 cycles...

After 3 cycle (couple weeks), this MTS looks super sandy...

I don't know what happened because it didn't look all that sandy at the beginning and look it now...

Attachment 154537

See all the sand. Before it looked like about 10% sand and now it looks more like 90% sand. Also, it doesn't have that grey color that it is suppose to have.

Can I get some opinions on this?

Which one of the following should I do?

1. Start over and MTS some new topsoil
2. Find some top soil to NPT
3. Just use what I got

I don't want to spend much on substrate so please don't say use AS. Also, I plant to cap with Black Diamond.

go to lowes and pick up some Evergreen brand top soil or potting soil, thats what i use, its good stuff. the top soil is what i use the most, it looks more like compost potting soil than topsoil, very little sand in it. and its pretty cheap like $1.50 a bag.
