ATTN: Seachem Rep's Getting Flourite in Australia
Just a heads up about the Australian Seachem substrate state of affairs. Seachem products are the best in the world. I love them. When i can afford it i usually go with a seachem product over any other. The one item i think is the best is there substrates. "Flourite" is a fantastic product, only problem is, they dont make it in Australia, we have to ship it in from the US. The product itself is very reasonably priced, however, because we have to ship it in, the final cost of the product in Australia is just plain ridiculous. Hobbyist in the US pay $40 USD for a 14 kg bag of flourite. Thats $53 AU, this price i think is very very good for the quality of the product you get. But because us Aussies dont make it locally, we have to ship it, and the final retail price goes from $53 AU to $175 AU per 14 kg bag which is $132 USD a bag!! I've worked it out, it will cost me around $1000 AU or $753.719 USD to do my substrate in my 48x24x28 tank at 4" deep.
I dont really mind paying $1000 AU for it the first time, but what happens in 4 - 5 years time when the Flourite starts losing its effect and i have to replace it, that'll be another $1000 AU, so if it lasts me for 5 years it costs me $250.00 a year to have a flourite substrate.
Would i just be better off with a gravel that has a peat and laterite bottom layer, substrate? Will i get the same effects as a flourite substrate?
And yes i have considered a 50% flourite substrate and dont like that idea.
