ATTN: Seachem Rep's Getting Flourite in Australia

Just a heads up about the Australian Seachem substrate state of affairs. Seachem products are the best in the world. I love them. When i can afford it i usually go with a seachem product over any other. The one item i think is the best is there substrates. "Flourite" is a fantastic product, only problem is, they dont make it in Australia, we have to ship it in from the US. The product itself is very reasonably priced, however, because we have to ship it in, the final cost of the product in Australia is just plain ridiculous. Hobbyist in the US pay $40 USD for a 14 kg bag of flourite. Thats $53 AU, this price i think is very very good for the quality of the product you get. But because us Aussies dont make it locally, we have to ship it, and the final retail price goes from $53 AU to $175 AU per 14 kg bag which is $132 USD a bag!! I've worked it out, it will cost me around $1000 AU or $753.719 USD to do my substrate in my 48x24x28 tank at 4" deep.

I dont really mind paying $1000 AU for it the first time, but what happens in 4 - 5 years time when the Flourite starts losing its effect and i have to replace it, that'll be another $1000 AU, so if it lasts me for 5 years it costs me $250.00 a year to have a flourite substrate.

Would i just be better off with a gravel that has a peat and laterite bottom layer, substrate? Will i get the same effects as a flourite substrate?

And yes i have considered a 50% flourite substrate and dont like that idea.

I pay $17.99 for a 7 kilo bag. Which by the way is the ONLY way it's packaged.

And you are not going to have to change it out if 4 or 5 years. In fact you will never HAVE to change it during your lifetime.

Why spend all that money for Fluorite? It's ridiculous. Sure it's a fantastic substrate, but not near worth $132 a bag.

Just buy what you can. Is Aquasoil not available there?

In college....so no aquariums for a while.....

thanks for reply's. Hi rex, love your site, you are god. Go the marines!

no nothing is available in australia but imported substrates.

Unfortunately ive just learned the cost of a 3x150watt lighting setup. Not the cost of the setup, but the monthly electricity bill. $7.00AU/$5.25USD a month per 150watt light. i cant really afford that right now. Although its not that much when you consider what other hobbies cost, i already pay for martial arts and soccer per month and cant afford a halide setup.

oh well, maybe when i get a bigger salary, i can give you pics of my tank. Which was going to be a 48x24x28, 3x150watt Halides, soil substrate, pressure cylinder CO2, Barr Dosing and Discus. Would of been nice, oh well.

Given the cost, the ADa aqua soil would be a better deal I would think.

I can get Flourite on sale for about 15$ a 7 Kg bag.
ADA AS for about 26.99 a bag, then since that's about 2x the volume of flourite and you have no rising at all required, about the same cost if not a tad less.

Note, the ADA is sent from Japan to the USA, Flourite is a somewhat local product(the USA is a large place like Oz, so shipping is not that cheap either, but it's at least local and at shops here)

Tom Barr
