Sands used in aquaria, including LFS store-bought brands, play sand, or pool filter sand, are inert, therefore there is a need to use root tab ferts for growth of rooted plants.
Pool filter sand is generally very clean, dust & grit-free, and needs little or no rinsing.
Play sands obtained @ big box stores are less dense, finer, grittier/ dirtier, and usually require significant rinsing to avoid cloudy water conditions initially.
Play sands also tend to free-float into the water column when disturbed, are easily siphoned out when vacuuming, and get into, & clog up, filters & assemblies; whereas pool filter sand is denser/heavier and does not usually have those negative qualities.
There are so many different brands & types of LFS bought sands, that you never know what you're going to get, although they're not usually very fine, nor very dirty/dusty.
