How much sand do I need?

How many LBS. of sand for a 40 gallon long tank
48'' long..x 13'' wide
pool filter sand
around 3'' deep.

I used one 50 lb bag to do a 55 which has a similar footprint. Mine was a cap though... you may want to grab a second bag if you're doing all sand.

4' x 1' x .25' = 1 cubic foot.

Sand weighs pretty close to 100 lbs per cubic foot.

+1 on this. I used 3/4 of a 50lb bag of play sand as a cap in my 38g with a 3' x 1' footprint. The cap is roughly 1-2" deep. Two 50lb bags of sand will probably work out fine for you if you want something that will yield 3" depth of substrate.
