Plant Substrate vs Root tabs

Could anybody tell me which is actually better? using a planted aquarium substrate, or using root tabs. Does it equal out the same?

The only one I know that does anything super special over a year plus is ADA. The rest all just looks pretty.

I went for flourite personally since I have Stratum now and don't extremely love it. It's nice but a little to messy for my liking.

Yeah I used Fluval Stratum before, and it was extremely messy. Once I rinsed it off, it pretty much was just mud.

I'm currently using Floramax, topped with eco complete. I don't really particularly care for the way it looks and it actually isn't very pretty lol. But I hadn't had any success with growing plants until I switched to the fm/eco.
