Eco Complete PROBLEM...

I'm setting up a new tank. I leak tested it for two days and the water was clear.

I added 3 bags of Eco and the water turned milky white.
I let it run over night and when I got up and checked it there was no change.

This morning I drained and refilled it twice and while its looks better it still looks milky.

Is this normal? What is it?

I had a bad batch once. It will just raise your PO4. Keep up with the water changes and in a few months your phosphates will start to drop off.

That really sounds like a bad batch. As yoink indicated, PO4 is a major issue. And a PO4 test will let you know for sure. If you got a bad batch, any PO4 test kit will show wicked high PO4. I had some bad EC and my PO4 tested off the charts.

I think yoink's experience has been shared by a number of other members that got a bad batch into their tank. But yoink doesn't seem too concerned - some other people had really bad problems. You might want to read some of their threads to see if you are ready to go through what they did.

The only difference I noticed was that I didn't have to dose phosphate for a long time. All the plants grew well and I've had no algae problems out of the tank. I know carib-sea was replacing the bad stuff awhile back. I would give them a call if you start to notice ill effects.

Yup - Carib Sea replaced my 7 bad bags for free, shipping included. Since I almost had this problem myself, I've been kind of watching what happened to people. Yoink, you appear to be one of the lucky ones. But there are others too, so you aren't alone in having no terrible problems. But some people have had some algae and plant health nightmares - and then granted - it's tough to definately blame it on the EC. But it sure looks that way.

They are going to send me new bags. Rick said to just dump the existing Eco into the garden and start over.

At least I didn't have anything in the tank yet but now I have to wait for another week before I get started.

Well I just tested for PO4 and it shows 0...

I threw in a polypad and it started turning tan really fast.

The tank is no clearer then when I left this morning.

I would test the others but my new kit has not arrived yet.

Cheers,
Dan
