Mix or layer it?

Hi there!

I just brought some gravel/sand and flourite for my new tank. The pet shop assistant said to wash it all and mix the flourite in with the sand/gravel. But then I read that some people layer it? Putting a layer of flourite on the botton and your gravel/sand on top?

What would be better? Layer it or mix it? Or maybe it doesn't matter, as my gravel/sand is smaller than the flourtie. So maybe it might just be a waste of time if I layer it anyways. As the sand will go the bottom eventually?

Thanks for any suggestions...

If the grain sizes are similar mix it. Other wise it doesn't make a difference as the larger grains will end up on top. If your sand is fine grained find something else. A layer of fine sand under Flourite can cause problems.

BTW, check out Rex's site (in his sig) for rinsing the flourite. It will save you a lot of headaches, and looking at a tank of cocoa.

Its not reeeally fine, its just a bit smaller. Its not "sand". More like a very small gravel. But thanks anyway, for the good tips.
