Flourite for 5.5gal?

Im going to start a nicely planted 5.5 gal tank. I plan on housing Cherry reds shrimp in it. I dont know to much about substrates.. But My LFS carries flourite.. Do I need this? or can I just get black sand or very fine black gravel?

Take your pick. Look up lots of other substrate threads. A 5.5 gallon is just a smaller tank - the substrate threads still apply. I've got a 5.5 w/ flourite, it works well. You would be just fine w/ black gravel, pool sand or even pink rocks.

Plants will like the flourite over plain gravel, but it's not required. I don't think the cherries will care either.

I have a 5 gallon with flourite and it looks great and the plants are happy. I should have washed it better before putting it in (lots of dust) but I like the look of the Flourite in a small tank, personally. As was mentioned above, though, there are lots of options that will work well for plants and shrimp. I used about 1/2 a bag of Flourite, by the way.

Come to think of it, I might have used a bit more than half a bag myself -- maybe 2/3 to 3/4?

I certainly used more than half. The suggestion of 1 lb per 1 gallon isn't very good. I try to use 1.5 lbs per gallon on anything new I set up.

I used most of a bag of flourite and then added the leftovers to my existing 75 gallon flourite set-up. A little washing and some creativity w/ a funnel and tube helped keep the dust-up down to about nothing. (basically a beer bong).

Flourite would work for a 5.5 gallon and plants would grow well
