Dirting a tank

Compared to other planted aquarium substrates, is dirting a tank really worth it?

Pros: super cheap, looks good, can cap with whatever works for you, plants do really well

Cons: it is very easy to break the cap and get exposed soil, which leads to ammonia spikes. You must be very careful when planting, trimming, and vacuuming to keep the cap intact. Tends to get anaerobic, so you have to poke it frequently. Moving plants is tough without getting soil all over.

I am new, so maybe I am doing it all wrong. I have three dirted nanos, and the plants are all happy. I will be using Aquasoil on my 12g long, because the cap drives me crazy. I also would like to be able to move things without it being a huge deal.

Depends on what you would consider 'worth it'. Its a LOT cheaper than made-for-purpose substrate.

Ammonia spikes don't happen after the initial break in period. Moving plants is tough.
