Questions about pathways

So most aquascapes have a pathway, river or stream of sand. Ive attempted it once but the sand mixes with my substrate. How do I prevent this from happening. Any ideas?

My day is better whenever I buy a new plant.

Rocks or plastic dividers. The ones you'd find at HD to help section off rock or sand pits. Although you might end up buying a lot of it. Cut up some Tupperware maybe?

Most people use some sort of thin plastic. You can either keep it in if you trim it a bit below where the substrate will be or remove after. I think it actually looks better if you remove the dividers as they mix slightly giving a softer look.
