Dirt n Sand?

Just wondering what's a good depth of substrate to plant in, I'm gonna do dirt with sand as a cap?

about 3" total is the average,
using sand as a capping material I start with about 1" sand over 1.5 to 2" soil

Personally, I'm convinced people don't use enough substrate. I've never seen a gardener use only 2" of soil. Even potted houseplants are deeper than that.

I just started building our twenty-gallon tank. It has three tiers of substrate; 2", 4", and 6" deep with about half an inch of sand as a cap.

I plan to put small plants like crypto parva and banana plants on the bottom since they don't root deeply. The other two layers will get bigger plants that send their roots deeper.
