Adding a layer of new to old substrate???

So im planning on doing my first rescape of my tank since ive set it up in january. Im looking to make the slope affect from back to front. Now i have like 2/3 of some plant substate i got from petsmart (I want to say it was called Eco-complete but cant remember) and 1/3 gravel. Will I be ok just taking some plants and driftwood out and adding enough sub to make a slope and not disturning the bottem too much. Im trying to get my crypto spirals and crypto wendi closer to the back of the tank and higher. I planted them too close to the front. i recently added some young shrimp so im trying to be a little cautious

I have done it before with no problems. Just make sure your new substrate is the same size or larger than the old. If you were to add, say sand, not only will it eventually sink to the bottom but in the process, it will make your substrate denser so water can't easily flow through it and may become anaerobic.
