Switching Substrates

Hello all, new to the forum here!

I currently have a stocked 20 gallon long aquarium, that at first, i thought was going to be simple, with some silk plants. Well that's changed, and now I want to do a planted aquarium Now I'm not new to the aquarium hobby, as I've had both SW and FW aquariums for 3 years, but took a break after my nephew destroyed my reef with dogfood.

In essence, I want to change the substrate to something that would be more beneficial to the plants, such as eco-complete, or something of the sort, but i dont know if it would be smart to take out the preexisting substrate.

Thanks all!

whats the pre existing substrate? I use flourite for one of my planted tanks the other I use caribean sand.

So a guy walks into a Pet Store

Guy: "I have Algae on my drift wood!"

Pet Clerk: "Take two Plecos and call me next week."

I pulled out 50% water in buckets and kept my fish in there and kept the filter running on the bucket with the fish. Then I pulled my Substrate out. Do not rinse the tank just pull out with hand and sand shovel dont worry about getting every last piecie but then cover what you couldnt get or just get lazy but 20g want take long lol but then put 50% new water in and put the old water back fish filter heater anything els. I did it on my 40gallon and it work great no problems. I had sand mixed with gravel so sand was a pain to try to get out
