Question Substrate layering questions/ideas

Just wanted to get some input on my idea for layering my substrate. I'm thinking about 0.5" Clay Kitty Litter with Root Tabs -> 1.5-2" MTS -> 0.5-1" Cap. My thoughts behind it are that the clay litter will absorb and help "store" some nutrients. Overkill? Should I just mix the clay litter with the MTS?

On a side note, any thoughts on a 0.5-1" MTS with 0.5" cap along the front of the tank for "layered" look? Thinking about using 3" stone walkway border. Want to do maybe a short grass path about 4-6" wide along the width of my 48" tank.

Friend - "You know thats not level right?"
Me- "Im a paramedic, not an engineer.... I'll make it work...."

I would skip the kitty litter. Seems it is the poorest choice among the related products. To get that benefit look into Safe-T-Sorb or Turface.
I like the color of the Safe-T-Sorb best, and I think it would be the best if you blended it with the potting soil.

To avoid the layered look of substrate and cap seen at the front glass try this:
Put a temporary barrier (strip of cardboard is enough) an inch or so from the glass. Fill between the glass and the divider with sand, and behind the divider with soil. When you gently remove the barrier the substrate and the cap should hold their places. Cap material against the glass will hide the substrate.
It will not last, though. Roots, digging fish, anything that disturbs the set up will start mixing substrate and cap.
