150 gallon substrate fine tuning

Hello EVeryone,

I just bought a 150 gallon that I want to set up for some geophagus Tapajos Red Head along with some rainbows and tetras.

I have picked up 200 lbs of Leslie's pool filter sand along with three 55oz API Laterite boxes.

My plan was to put the Laterite on the bottom and then cap it with the sand.

A few questions:

1. Will the Sand sink into the laterite and end up leaving the laterite at the top of my substrate?

2. will the Red Head Tapajos dig down into the sand and expose my laterite causing issues?

3. If not with the top 2 questions, would adding peat to on the bottom beneath my sand add any value?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe Geophagus Tapajos like to take a mouthful of sand looking for food and pass it through the gills?

So you really only want the fine sand were they will feed. You could plant in clay pots and hid the pots in Rock work or Driftwood.

I think the Laterite will float up as the fine sand sinks to the bottom
