Cheap dark substrate

I'm looking for a cheap, preferably dark-colored substrate suitable for plants. Looking to get a depth of about 2.5" in a 40 breeder. Any recommendations?

I have only rinsed out my new SafeTSorb but outside and wet it is a rich deep chocolate brown. $10 for 40 pounds shipped and Diana reports it was enough for a just about 2" layer in a 60x16" tank so would be plenty for your 40B.

I used UP aquasoil from GLA. So far it has been Great. It is a dark grey when dry and basically black when wet. I used 2 bags in my 40b for a total cost of $54+shipping. here is a picture of my new tank with it.

I can vouch, safetysorb is great.

10 bux a bag shipped. 1.5 bags was enough to cap my 125g dirt tank.

I read on another thread that safetsorb sucks up carbonates like a sponge and causes pH to crash. Is there anyway to offset this, maybe add a huge Texas holey rock in the tank? Adding baking soda to keep pH from crashing is something I'd rather avoid if possible.

filter sock of crushed coral in the filter is what I'm going to be using. it doesn't do it for long from what I've read.

I have a few small spoonfuls of crushed coral in a filter bag and it's offset the tannins released by the mopani in my 20g.

I'd be interested if anyone has tried a piece of holey rock in their tank and in the net effects on the water parameters.

Otherwise, I might just go with a few bags of Flourite Dark.

Go with black beauty blasting sand. There's a place in Brooklyn that sells 100lb bags.
