Look for Safe-T-Sorb in places like Tractor Supply, perhaps Graingers.

It is a blend of soft browns and medium grey that looks very natural, and subtle.
It will remove the carbonates from the water.

It can be used straight from the bag if you want, but be prepared to do a couple of water changes (rinsing it in the tank) or you can rinse it in buckets if you need smaller amounts. The first 2 fill-and-drains were pretty muddy, but the third fill was pretty good, and it has not clouded up when I rearranged the rocks, or did another water change.

40 lb bag filled my 5' x 16" tank barely 2" deep. After I rearranged the rocks, and they took up some space that was just fine.

Probably not in the city.

It is mostly an automotive product, used to clean up spills. Start making phone calls.

Molton is the company that makes STS, maybe there is a 'dealer locator' at their site?

There is a sales web site using the name drillspot
They will ship. They are in Colorado, but I think they order it for you from the nearest Grainger. You might look for Grainger in NYC.

www.drillspot.com is the place I got mine. $10 shipped w/ no sales tax even though it was drop shipped from a local Grainger.

In addition to Safe T Sorb, you can try unscented non-clumping kitty litter. Its more tan than brown though. You should test to see that it doesnt fall apart when wet by putting a small amount in a cup of water for a few days.

Kitty litter, STS, and other absorbent clay products actually have higher CECs than Flourite or Eco Complete.

There are also other oil absorbent products on the market. STS is highly recommended because of its color. Most of the others tend to be light tan in color. Walmart sells a product, of which I've forgotten its name (Hi Dri?), which is rumored to fall apart when wet.

You can do a search of the Substrate forum to get more pics and info but here's one I found:
https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...81&postcount=6

I thought there was a thread that showed a photo of a plate with Turface, kitty litter & Safe T Sorb, but can't seem to find it right now.

edit: Further in that thread is more photos of the same tank: https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...1&postcount=56

Try your local landscaper for some river sand. I googled NYC and found Plantworks Inc.28 East 4th Street, New York, NY 10003, (212) 674-8111

It looks like this.

I paid $3 for a 50lb bag here in Austel GA. It gets darker in time. In fact after a year I started having black tar areas. I never siphoned any up though in that time.
