Substrate choice for discus fish

been reading so much on different types of substrates im about to go nuts! im looking to grow plants and have discus fish, all I have right now is a driftwood i found. I just need opinions on what exactly i need and most bang for buck! I dont really want to spend over 200+ for substrate if i dont have too!

The Discus could not care less.

I would suggest one of the Turface/Oil-Dri/Safe-T-Sorb types of products. They will remove the KH from the water so the pH can drop. You will have to deal with the GH (if it is too high)

1 40 lb bag of Safe-T-Sorb covered my 88 gallon tank (5' x 16") a bit under 2" deep. I got it a bit deeper by adding some rockwork.
Safe-T-Sorb is available at Tractor Supply, and maybe Grainger.

Consider quartz-based silica pool filter sand. Very inexpensive & will grow plants well with the use of root tab ferts.
But most important of all is that it's very easy to keep clean - no detritus gets into or under it, & all waste may be readily vacuumed up off the top of the sand. So it therefore makes it far easier to maintain an excellent tank cleansing routine and quality water conditions - a true must for successful discus-keeping.
