Laterite in sand plus soil question

I'm in the process of redoing my old 48x24x22 tank and so far i have the lights sort of sorted out. The substrate however is another foray i need to get into.

I have been told that laterite mixed with river sand is a good substrate for the planted tank. Upon further reading, however, i found out that it's not quite enough. So I'm planning to add mineralized top soil in the mix just to get my bases covered.

Is this a good idea or am i setting myself up for disaster?

Laterite simply provides iron, nothing else. Sand provides nothing at all. It is simply used to cover the laterite to prevent the laterite from clouding the water.

"Mineralized soil" provides a variety of macro and minor nutrients including iron, so there would be no reason to use the laterite. Actual minerlized soil, if you follow the recipe, is a time consuming process to make, and should be done carefully.

You can grow plants with laterite just fine. You would just need to add other nutrients to the water.
