Anyone have disasterous results from using these small pebbles in their tank?

I do not know if these are limestone, or not. I have seen them, they look tumbled or coated to be shiny. If they are tumbled then the only question is if they will alter the mineral levels. You would have to buy the ones you like and test them yourself. If they are coated I am not sure I would want them in a tank.

Some mixes do not seem polished and just look like irregular pebbles others seem to have an all black polished look.

I've used the larger black polished looking ones from the dollar store in my tank for the last year with no ill effects.

You can get a LOT LOT LOT more rock for a buck at rock yards, masonry stores and so on, I never buy gravel/rock at a dollar type store.

I've bought cheap gravel before from Pet stores. The ones that are colored don't look very good in the tank. You can tell that the stones are coated in a layer of color. The "river rock" gravel looks perfectly fine to me. Look like real rocks and are nice and smooth.

don't buy Petco/smart black gravel, the "black" doesn't last long, mine are now faded white :/ and they were like $5-6 for a tiny bag.

I concur, the white sand they have isn't good for a reef either.

For cheap substrate, if you want a flourite like substitute clay based substrate; you can get a 50lb for $10 shipped from drillspot.com.
