Black Sand

I'm planning on redoing my 29 gallon FW tank and I would really like to use black sand but don't want to pay the prices for it at the LFS. I'm having a hell of a time finding Black Diamond or Black Beauty blasting sand here in the Seattle area. I've found it at several store but they are all atleast two states away from me (found it on Amazon also for 8.99 a bag but the shipping was like 50 bucks so that's not worth it either).

Anyone got any suggestions on where I might be able to find black sand in bulk??? I can get PFS and playsand at HD or Lowe's but I would really like to have black sand and I've not found either of those in black.

Starting to get really fustrated over this search for black sand!!!!!!

Closest one to me is in Casper WY (I'm in Seattle WA). So unfortuanetly that's not an option.

The only thing that comes up when I search for John Deere tractor supply is tractors. If you mean Tractor Supply Company, the closest one to me is in Cali and that's no more feasable for me than Menards is.

Starting to think I'm SOL if I want black sand unless I'm willing to pay the way too high LFS prices.

Contact a welding or painting or sand blasting type place see if they use it and would be willing to sell you some of their order since they use it anyways

Have spent all afternoon calling places and either the companies don't sell to the public, will only sell me the media if I contract them to blast something for me, or they have no idea what I'm talking about. Starting to be sorry that I ever decided to redo this tank. Finding affordable black sand in this area is nearly impossible and very fustrating. Guess I'll just have to use something else....

I live in the Seattle area too and recently got black sand for a 10 gallon. I got mine from Petco.com.

I'm trying to find an affordable alternative to the high priced sand at the LFS. I'm looking at having to buy around 40 pounds of the stuff and I'd rather not pay more for the sand than I did for the entire tank setup. That's why I was looking for the blasting media. It's around 10 bucks or so for 50 pounds as opposed to the 15 to 20 bucks for 20 pounds. It's just the finding that is proving to be fustrating.

Not sure how much will fit in a large flatrate box, but perhaps someone could ship you some if enough would fit to make it worth the effort.

Might be time to take a trip. Got some vacation time? "Just happen" to drive near any of the suppliers!
