I would like to know as well. Some of the stuff just turns to mud in aquariums. I think it has to be fired or baked and not "dried". I really want to use akadama and this it NOT COOL that we can't get it anymore. I think I'll move to Asia.... where I can get any aquarium supply I could dream of. lol jk

Brand name.

From what research I have done Double Red line is supposed to be more durable and last longer in water. I have no experience with other akadama brands though I have only used double red line. If I am not mistaken there was somebody on the forums not to long ago who was using a different name brand Akadama.

Why not just use Turface? It strips the KH out of the water and *reportedly* lowers the PH by the same way Akadama does... It is clay and used for bonsai and orchids. Not sure of the price though.

Try turface it is the same thing with smaller grains. I love akadama from the tanks I've seen it in but I prefer turface MVP which I have in my holding tank and soon display

Turface is not the same as Akadama.

Turface is a clay-based manufactured product.

Akadama is natural clay that is mined from a particular region in Japan and then fired for use primarily in bonsai.

It was found to contain organic material (sticks and twigs) so the US with their infinite wisdom decided that it couldn't be imported anymore unless it was cleaned up.
