leveling sand as a cap

I found a bag of leveling sand at lowes and its the perfect color! Could I use it or is it bad fir thetank?

It's probably safe for the tank chemically speaking (assuming it's pure sand, not fancy polymeric sand), but it may contain fines that are light enough to get pulled into your filter/make a mess.

Rinse some of it off and test it out in a bucket of water to see how it behaves.

the leveling sand i buy from lowes (to work on pools) is called "play sand" and i have heard that is not aquarium safe....

its a little courser than play sand so im thinking it should be fine after a rinse

Read the old threads in this forum. Members here are using pretty much every type of normal, natural sand you can ask a question about.

I used Quickrete Premium play sand, light tan in color and very fine already rinsed and strained. I was surprised how quickly it settles down after being disturbed, and for very cheap.
