Flourite for small-root plants?

I have Flourite as the only substrate in both of my tanks and have noticed that the smaller rooting plants seem to have difficulty holding onto the bottom. Specifically, my HC does not want to spread much at all and ends up uprooted by very small disturbances, much like the micro sword planted in the tank.

Is this issue common of Flourite? I am looking into getting some black Cichlid sand or similar product to top off the Flourite with in hopes of making the small roots take hold easier.

Unfortunately, it's sometimes tough to get delicate plants like HC to take root unless they've got smaller particles to grab onto. I've never had luck with HC in Flourite or similar (shape/weight/etc) substrates.

Topping it with sand may not work too well, as the sand will tend to settle beneath it.

Are you keeping the HC trimmed low to the substrate? Or is it just floating up when you're working in the substrate surrounding it?

I have never trimmed the HC. It uproots whenever I work near it and floats to the surface. The same is true for the microsword.

Is there a different material that you'd recommend topping the Flourite with instead?

If you've never trimmed it, that could be part of your problem. You've gotta keep it trimmed near the substrate or it automatically uproots regardless of the material you're using.

I didn't know this. I'll give it a try and see how it goes. Hopefully it plants itself in the Flourite.
