Dirt and sand, cloudy water

I filled the tank last night with 1" dirt and 1" sand, I washed the sand before using it but guess not well enough. What is the best way to clear the water? Water changes or filter floss? Or will it just settle on it's own?

I have always used coral sand with Malawi's so never had this problem lol

Get your filter cycling and it will settle on its own eventually. You can try some bio-magnet if you really want to, but its not really necessary.

Ok, so 4hrs later and it looks like this, getting there nicely!

Excuse the tape measure lol needed for designing the sand layout in Photoshop.

That is a very mild haze and will clear up just fine. Get started with the fishless cycle.

When you are ready to plant, drain the tank. Plant. Then put a plate or plastic bag over the finished aquarscape and run the water in slowly. Allow the water to seep over the edges of the plate. This will minimize the disturbance to the sand, and minimize the clouding. You will probably get about the same amount of haze as in your first picture.
