How to get high sloped substrate

I was wondering if anyone has had this same thought and what they found. My question is, "how can we get the high substrate look that we all want without spending a fortune on the substrate we desire?" I wanna buy Eco complete substrate for my 3 foot tank but I don't wanna spend a fortune for several bags. Is there a way of achieving a high sloped scape using different material that doesn't result in compaction thus poor aeration, or a trap for food particles to build a nitrate factory. I was considering cheap aquarium gravel or fairly good sized rocks to place underneath, then have Eco complete on top. I'm talking atleast 2inches on top, more in other places. Any thoughts?

I had a small tile saw on hand and rocks which are easy to cut so I went with building retaining walls much like outside. I cut the edges off for use and then added cheap gravel under the back, higher portion. As to the nitrate, I find my plants suck up the nitrates, so they are not a problem with planted tanks as they are in my fish only tanks.

Using rocks can make it difficult to plant. Try to avoid it, or have enough substrate covering them.

There are 2 types of people on this forum. Those that have algae, and those that lie and say they don't.
