Should be. I have used unrinsed quartz silica and coal slag with no problems but clouding with the latter.

pool filter sand is a better choice (imo)
larger grain and less silicates

I put mine in a bucket and run the hose full blast till it's all clear that cleans out most of the small particles that cloud the water... I even use it in my turtle tank.

Get pool filter sand.
Play sand has so much fine material that by the time you have rinsed all the fines away you have lost 1/3 or more of the material, and wasted a LOT of water.

Pool filter sand has been graded so all the particles are the same size. A quick rinse and it is ready to use.

Pricing per Home Depot web site:
Play sand (4 different kinds) 50 lbs for $4.57
Pool Filter Sand 50 lbs for $5.98

Play sand costs 76% of the cost of PFS, not 75% less.
5.98 x .76 = 4.54
75% less than 5.98 = $1.50
...and by the time you spend all that time and water rinsing it, you have washed away a lot of it, it becomes more expensive.
