Smile Substrate cleaning

I have a bare substrate with no gravel on top. How do i clean this? I cant vacuum it because all of the substrate gets sucked right up and mulched!

Cheers,

Seb

Typically in planted tanks you don't vacuum your substrate because the plants get fertilized from the fish poop.

But when you are doing a water change many people typically swirl the hose around a few inches from the bottom to collect any small things laying on the surface of the substrate.

CatB- well I don't know what you would refer to it as I'm afraid, perhaps 'soil', 'dirt' - but basically that stuff you buy that looks like small brown balls that you can plant the plants in!

Calmia - thank you for understanding what I meant and thanks for the information.
