Black diamond blasting media?

I am looking to change my substrate to the black sand media stuff. Any feed back good or bad about this sand?

i just got some of this, haven't put it in yet, but it looks really nice. i've heard that it doesn't even need rinsing because it's pre-cleaned. i'm really looking forward to it.

its actually a really good substrate, there are some irons pellets in there that will leach Iron into your tank which does good things for your plant. Otherwise all you have to do is supp with root tabs and you're good to go.

Make sure you wash it first, when i bougth it i found out it was leaching GH and Kh into the water, probably came from dirt contaminants where it was stored.

sometimes it does need to be very well rinsed, sometimes it doesnt, i had 2 bags in ny that were perfectly clean, i bought a bag down here in fl, and it left a oily film on the water, still 3 months later and im still seeing oily stuff on the water from it. prolly gonna redo the tank tbh.

Used it in my 40g; tank, no rinse & no problems. I did have about a table spoon of flooding material.

Very uniform, very dark, actually too dark with the crypts I have so I syphoned it all out and used Sakrete all purpose sand $4.99 for 40#s. Much better, sm. gravel/sand mix. looks much more realistic than PFS or BlackDuamond.

okay i lied, DEFINITELY rinse it. mine was oily (i rinsed it to be sure, and oh man...), AND i found a feather of all things in it.

you can get it at tractor supply co. $7.99 for 50 lbs. of 20/40 grit (which is the kind you want).

its all on who produced it and how they packaged it there isnt only one distributer of this there are many so just test the bag with a few handfulls in a bucket and check for yourself!! i didnt have to rinse out of the 400lbs i got.

i can say that my cory does actually dig in this seen him go 1/2" down while searching for food with no ill effects, i have seen some bags actually have metal shavings from the factory but thats all on who packages it and there specs for whats ok it is sandblasting media after all.

i used some from my fish store. they cleaned it and everything. sold 50 pound bags for $30. i thought it was a little abrasive, but my cories are still doing fine. in my 40 gallon tank, i went with sakrete play sand as well. 5 bucks for a 50 pound bag. my tank is amazon themed and this sand recreates that quite accurately.
